El Libro de Niño
In this project, we were to write a children's book on any topic we wanted. We made many drafts and revisions, and by the end we had a colorful and fun children's book. We then published and sent them off to children in Nicaragua, who didn't have access to their own books. I hope you enjoy my book!
Dia de Los Muertos Exhibition
Dia de Los Muertos is a Mexican tradition that originated over 3,000 years ago and is still celebrated all over the world today. The 2 day tradition starts on Nov. 1 and 2, coinciding with the Catholic All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day. Unlike Halloween, the tradition of Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of dead loved ones, rather than fearing spirits and death. On November 1st every year, people create altars for their loved ones to come back to for a night and be with them. They light candles, display pictures, and objects that their loved ones cherished. People also make Pan de Muertos which is a traditional Mexican recipe baked for Dia de los Muertos. People dress up and paint their faces in skulls to represent the celebration of the dead.
I chose to celebrate my grandfather. He died before I was born, so I never got the chance to meet him. This meant I had to ask my family what he was like. The person I went to the most for answers about my grandpa is my dad. They were extremely close. He told me all kinds of things, that I didn’t necessarily need to know for this project, but is was important to my dad that I knew the little things about him. My dad had so many amazing objects and pictures of him, so I was very pleased with how it turned out. I had many objects from his churches that he worked at, and so many pictures. Setting up the altar was pretty easy, because I had set it up once at home, but with the black sheet and the candles, it looked so much better.
I am so happy we did this project. I knew about Dia de los Muertos, but this project gave me so much more information that I actually enjoyed learning. The thing I enjoyed the most though, was learning about my grandfather. This project helped me learn so many things that I would have never known about. It gave my dad so much pleasure to talk about his dad, and I am so glad I got to share that experience with him. I think my project turned out really well, and I’m so happy that I got the opportunity to learn so many new things.
