Socialization and Mask Project:
The Socialization and Identity project is one I am sure to never forget. This project was more impactful and inspiring than anything I have ever done in a school setting. At the core of this project was sociology as a whole. While we were generally studying sociology, we were focusing on socialization and the cycle in which we are socialized in our society today. We learned about other cultures and societies in the world, which was so important to be able to understand and even be able to compare to our society. This project helped us to understand how we are socialized by our peers, family, media, school, religion ect. , and how harmful it can be.
My Mask
This Is Me (Essay):
Reflection:
In this project, I learned many things about myself, and about my academic abilities. I grew so much as a person and as a student. One way I grew through this project was in my writing. I have always enjoyed writing, but in the past, I have never been excited or even interested in what I was writing for school. Writing this essay was so different. One specific thing I learned and grew in, was citing properly. Now, this might not seem like the biggest deal, but it is challenging to cite resources you found while keeping the flow of the essay. Another thing I felt I grew especially for this essay, was writing with vulnerability and how powerful relating personally in your writing is. Talking or writing about myself is not something I usually do, but for writing a successful essay in this project, this skill was necessary.
The biggest take-away from this project, is that learning can inspire. I never took anything away from school in the past, but this project has taught me so many things about the world. It has opened me up to so many new perspectives, and I feel as if I have come out of this project as a much more accepting and loving person. As for the exhibition design/ prep, I have learned how much one idea can create. I have been inspired by my peers because they have showed me how much we can make a difference when we come together to create something special. After completing this project, I see the world not as this big scary thing I have to face by myself, but as something I know I can make a difference in when we work together.
As a group worker, I had a goal of working with others to make this a project, one that every single person was proud of contributing to. I felt that if this was possible, I needed to understand everyone’s weaknesses/ strengths, and concentrating on what people found the most interesting. When my group and I shared our weaknesses/strengths something that was fascinating, was that one of our weaknesses, was almost always another person in the group’s strengths. This was amazing to me. I saw this as a way for my group members and I to really support each other to improve on our weaknesses throughout this project , and I think that is exactly what we did.
I think the biggest contribution I made as a group member and project manager, was giving people the time and space to create ideas they were passionate about. While giving them this freedom, I earned trust while also being able to guide them when they were going the wrong direction. Near the end of exhibition prep, I found myself becoming a part of every group. What I mean by this is, I wasn’t so much telling each of the groups what to do, but I was asking what they needed extra hands for, and helping out any group that needed it. I think that was something I did really well, and something I got a lot of appreciation for. If I were to grade myself, I would give myself somewhere around a 94-95%. I really put everything I had into this project, and I feel that grade is something I deserve.
