Strengths and WeaknessesThe two strengths I wrote down were leadership and open mindedness. I put down leadership, because it is a skill I think I have developed over the years and working in groups a lot. I was interesting, seeing what my other fellow project managers wrote down as strengths. It turns out that every single one of us put leadership as a strength. We talked about how this was a good quality for us in this project, but that we didn’t want to overpower the rest of the groups and become dictators.
As for my weaknesses, I put down risk taker and effective communication. I think that I struggle with keeping my mind in the direction of taking risks because it can be really scary. I usually am creative about the idea I create, but I almost never try to purposely take risks when it come to group or individual work. The other weakness I wrote down was effective communication. While I do think I excel in being a leader in group settings, I am not always good at getting my ideas heard and communicating my ideas to the other group members. I tend to have good ideas, and no share them because I feel as if they are going to be put n=down, or the group not hear the ideas fully. Something that was really amazing when my group and I shared, was that one of our weaknesses, was almost always another person in the group’s strengths. This was fascinating to me. I saw this as a way for my group members and I to really support each other to improve on our weaknesses throughout this project.

Hopes For ExhibitionFor this exhibition I hope to create an experience that people are really changed by. We want exhibition to be the social action part of this project, and I really want to create an exhibition where after people go through it, are inspired to make a change. The whole point of direction for change/ social action is to: educate, take a stand, raise awareness, question, reframe, ect. I have so many hopes for this exhibition, but my biggest one, is that we as 9th graders at Animas high school, make an exhibition that creates a direction for change.
Something that I would hope a parent or other adult would say, would be “I really understand this now. I want to make a change.” As for a sociology professor, I would hope that they would say that we really educated well, and that they were impressed by how much we know about the content, while also making it transformative and interesting. Individuality in exhibitionBefore I really get into the specifics, I want to say how much I have enjoyed this process. It has been one of the most important and inspiring experiences that I have ever done in a school setting. So now onto the specifics.
When we started this process, we were planning on an exhibition that was interactive and something that differed from a “normal” exhibition. We knew we wanted it to be anything but a stand with your mask and essay kind of exhibition, but we didn’t know what yet. Thinking back onto the first couple of days of brainstorm, it’s amazing how much this idea has grown. I think that is the beauty of this process of ideation. We don’t know what our little baby idea is going to grow into, but we know it will grow into something we are proud of. From our 2 wonderful teachers, we have been introduced into the process of design thinking. The first steps we are taking in this process are brainstorming and prototyping. This part of the process has already been so important and transformative to this project. We have formed hundreds of ideas and those ideas grow on each other, and those ideas grow on each other, and so on. Right now our idea is only a seed, and we are in the first stages of watching it grow. We had a lot of fun brainstorming and prototyping the first ideas for exhibition, but now- as Stephen would say- it’s time for things to get real. We are now jumping into the full design and construction of what exhibition is going to look like. I think something I am most excited for in a general sense is how each of us individually are going to put a piece of us into the final product. We can work in groups and work with each other to come up with new ideas, but I am so excited to see our individuality become a part of this exhibition. Specific things I am excited for are Project Management, marketing/ advertising, and design. I don’t necessarily think I would call myself a born leader. Although, if what I am doing is something I am passionate about, I consider myself someone who is extremely motivated to carry out whatever I put my mind to, and I think I would be good at being a project manager. As for design, I really think I could bring some good ideas to the table, while also being more behind the scenes which is what I usually prefer in big projects like this. I am very excited/ passionate about marketing and advertising. This was one of my first ideas for exhibition that I knew I wanted to work on. I think that if this project is really going to be the social action part of this project, we need as much of the society at this exhibition as possible. I think we could think of some really cool ways to advertise this exhibition so that people will want to come and be part of social action against the harmful cycles of Socialization. When working in groups it is easy to get caught up in the idea that the work will be more efficient because there are more people, more perspectives. I think that is true and I definitely support this, although when the groups are full of friends that can cause distractions, I think the groups can start to go into the wrong directions. My group for the prototypes worked well together, but I feel as if I were part of a group with just my friends, we might get distracted. A lot of people probably will not agree with me on this, but how I see it, if this project is something we are passionate about, we will take any steps to get this exhibition the best it can be. Even if that means we are not with our friends every second of it. |
